Class size is the number of students simultaneously learning in a classroom at a particular point in time. But, is there a relationship between class size and classroom performance?
Research shows that there are specific benefits to a smaller class setting. Here are some of the reasons:

1. Improved learning and class performance
There is a clear correlation between smaller class sizes and improved student performance on standardized tests. One study found that students in small classes outperformed their peers in larger classes by as much as 18 percentage points.
Smaller class sizes allow for more personalized instruction. Teachers can tailor their lessons to the needs of each of their students more easily when there are fewer students in the classroom. This leads to a more successful educational experience for everyone involved.

2. Individualized attention
Children are naturally curious about their surroundings and eager to participate in different learning activities. However, with some children, it is difficult for the teacher to quickly identify what motivates them to be more fully engaged in the classroom.
This is where teachers’ individualized attention comes into play.
When teachers can focus on what every child says and does, they can also find what motivates them.
A deeper understanding of a child’s motivations is key to developing instructional materials that fit the child, leading to the desired learner outcome in the long run. In smaller classes, teachers have the opportunity to give each student the individualized attention and personalized materials they need to succeed.

3. Positive learning experiences
In a classroom with a lower student-teacher ratio, children will have more equal opportunities for interaction and attention from the teachers. There will be less competition for attention, and with the easy and quick familiarity with their peers, students will be much more comfortable participating.
A highly comfortable setup promotes positive learning where students feel accepted, respected, and heard. They are encouraged to ask questions, share their thoughts and emotions, and participate in all activities.
When students feel they belong in a classroom, they develop a positive attitude towards their peers, teachers, and studying in general. This leads to a sense of community where everyone is accepted, honored, heard, and supported.
Recent research has shown that a positive attitude toward studying leads to improved test scores, longer lesson retention, and increased cooperation and teamwork.

4. Deeper classroom engagement
Smaller class sizes are often lauded as a way to improve student outcomes. And there is a good reason for this – smaller class sizes encourage student engagement.
When there are fewer students in a room, each has a greater chance to participate – to be called on to answer questions, explain their opinion, share their work, and show their talents.
Moreover, classroom engagement is key to developing self-esteem among children. The effects of engagement are heightened when their classmates cheer for them, applaud their courage and compliment their creativity.
All the positive reinforcement encourages the child to explore, express and discover more.

5. Unparalleled behavior management
Studies found a direct relationship between class size and disciplinary problems. Researchers found that lower class sizes lead to fewer behavior issues in the classroom since there are fewer children, and teachers can identify and respond quickly to disruptions.
When a child does seem disruptive, instead of just “managing the immediate problem”, the teacher has the time and space to work through the child’s feelings. This is more likely to help the child feel valued and supported by the morah, while teaching him how to work through his big feelings in a healthy way.
Children thrive in a classroom with reduced noise, disruptions, and distractions. It is a better learning environment where students can concentrate better on their tasks and lessons.

The class sizes in Chabad ELC
At Chabad ELC, we pride ourselves on maintaining smaller class sizes to help our educators identify and meet each student’s needs and challenge them to do their best.
Our low student-teacher ratio allows morahs to create tailor-made and meaningful lessons to teach each child – providing more growth and a deeper love for learning.
With smaller class sizes, morahs will know each student well. They will identify their stronger and weaker areas, which guide them in developing the educational materials each child needs. They will also frequently engage with the parents about their child’s holistic and academic progress, creating a strong parent-teacher partnership.
Here’s what one of our parents says about us:
“Chabad has provided my child with the most wonderful introduction to school. The teachers are so loving, observant, and engaging, and – with three to a classroom – very hands-on. My child is shy in new situations but she wakes up each day eager to get to class. She has really blossomed at Chabad.”
